We Like Video!!

Yes I like music videos, I grew up as part of the MTV generation, instead of playing music all day I would often put MTV on the TV in the front room, turn it up and enjoy the visual as well as the music. This was in the good old days of music shows such as Yo! MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball, Classic MTV and Post-Modern MTV to name a few. I stopped that experience, well life stopped it when more and more of my listening time was spent either at work, in the car or through the airpods.

A growing number of occasions have arisen over the last few years that despite a sizeable Vinyl collection, I am happy to stream music through a the TV hooked up to a beast of a soundbar (sorry neighbours). But the Spotify single image screen always raised the comments, not just from me that it could offer more, surely they had access to the videos, and I am sure it wasn’t only in my house this conversation arose.

A number of weeks ago I did notice a button had appeared that said ‘Switch to Video‘, which like a cartoon character faced with a big pulsing button saying ‘DO NOT PUSH’ on it, I pushed. I’m not calling it a revolutionary change but it is a marked improvement. I’m not saying i even watch the videos but they catch my attention on occasion. The best way to explain it is to say it feels a lot more native to the environment, it feels that is how it should be. So well done Spotify.

This is an excerpt direct from the Spotify article with links: “Earlier this year, Spotify introduced music videos in beta, giving Premium subscribers in 12 markets another way to connect with the songs and artists they love. Today we are starting to roll out that offering across 85 additional markets, giving even more Premium subscribers the opportunity to dive into the visual worlds of artists like Charli xcxLISAFontaines D.C.Nick WardAnirudh Ravichander, and Fireboy DML.”
