Released 34 years ago yesterday the 26th March 1990, “Step On” or “Who’s Gonna Step On You Again”, was covered by the Happy Mondays, renaming it “Step On” and helping to define an era!
The original version “He’s Gonna Step on You Again” is originally performed by John Kongos, and co-written by Kongos and Christos Demetriou. First released in 1971. It has been covered a couple of other times. The Happy Mondays cover used a sample of three guitar notes from the original giving it the sound we all know so well.
The Happy Mondays’ “Step On” became their biggest-selling single, reaching No. 5 in the UK and No. 57 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Why have I chosen this to mark an on this day? Because I’m seeing the Happy Mondays on Sunday night so thought I’d look some things up. Not my first time, I saw them a few years ago on a bit of a messy night but a great night was ha
A great night was covered in a previous blog post seeing Black Grape back in December last year, Shaun Ryder was on great form. The support act on that night was Tom Hingley and the Karpets, the Inspiral Carpets third singer. This Sunday the support is the Inspiral Carpets with their original singer Stephen Holt.
The second support this Sunday is the Stereo MCs, I last saw them at Shindig Festival this coming weekend back in 2018, fantastic live then so looking forward to that. See videos below from that show.
