On this day, the 24th April 1995, Oasis released their first number 1 single, Some Might Say.
Straight in at number 1, which was obviously a great result for the band but it put a dilemma in my head! What you ask, well here is the track listing.
- Some Might Say
- Talk Tonight
- Acquiesce
- Headshrinker
Some of the comments from reddit about Acquiesce
1-4: Not good. Regularly skip.
5: It’s okay, but I might have to be in the right mood to listen to it.
6: Slightly better than average. I won’t skip it, but I wouldn’t choose to put it on.
7: This is a good song. I enjoy it quite a bit.
8-9: Really enjoyable songs. I rank them pretty high overall.
10: Masterpiece, magnum opus, or similar terminology.
“Absolute banger, biblical, a tune, whatever other superlatives you want to use….”
“The Zenith of Oasis (and of Noel’s songwriting powers) – the sheer arrogance and insanity of tossing songs of this calibre away as B-sides. This should have absolutely been the A-side, or a double A-side with Some Might Say.”
This is my problem as well?
At the time I preferred it (unpopular opinion maybe) but i definitely listened to it more than “Some Might Say”, which is a great track, but so is “Talk Tonight”, but so is “Headshrinker”! Damn you Noel and your great B-Sides even now 29 years on I still debate this in my head when I hear or read about the tracks. Is “Acquiesce” better? It’s debatable? It’s subjective? I also think “Rockin’ Chair” is better than “Roll with it”.
Acquiesce – accept something reluctantly but without protest.
What is your opinion?
