What do I know about Niko B? I know as soon as he sang “Take the gherkin out of the inside”, Who’s that? What’s that? Was a regular play in our house, I like the Guerkins!! My wife was an instant fan and I never tired of hearing that, or Mary Berry, or a song about a Tresspass coat, I love social commentary.
We drove to Brighton for the instore at Resident Records on a hot bank holiday weekend, mid-afternoon the traffic wasn’t too bad but parking was fun! Had a few hours at the beach, bit of food and walked into the lanes to the record shop to be greeted with a sizeable excited youthful queue. Didn’t take long to get inside and grab a good spot with a clear view, slightly behind to the side but nobody in front of us, happy wife!
Guerkin hater aside, he is a true talent, great wordplay that talks to and obviously engages well with his generation. I think everyone in the place pretty much matched him word for word. Looking around, everyone had that same look in their eyes they have on their birthday or Christmas morning when staring at a big present!
He delivered! He didn’t make the crowd hang around, he stepped up, a few fist bumps and fun banter and gave all there what they wanted. What I really liked was it was honest and fun. He could pander to a stereotype but he’s clearly happy being himself and that showed. His housemates appeared he was chappy to see them and even introduced them. No facade just him.
As I said great social commentary music, think The Streets “Fit But You Know It” with a drop kick of optimism and bounce and you’re there. Fun, contagious and now available on his first full album. Buy it, listen to it, stream it you’ll find it hard not to like it!
Just a mention to the guys a Resident Music, a great organised event.
