I saw lucky enough too see Gaz Coombes recently on March 14th of this year perform a one man show to a small audience in Southampton. This time there was a band, a five piece band, the same but different!.
My image but sadly not my setlist. Gaz Coombes came onstage and had roughly 45 minutes in the support slot and without a doubt used the time well. Opening with Salamander from 2019 then slowing it down with a new song in Don’t Say its Over set the scene well.
Dropping back to Deep Pockets from Worlds Strongest Man to the beauty that is The Girl Who Fell to Earth from Matador, he navigated the solo back catalogue effortlessly. Back to Turn the Car Around for Long Live the Strange, an instant favourite of mine since my first listen and then back again to Matador for 20/20, returning to Worlds Strongest Man for Walk the Walk, much to the appreciation of the audience.
Gaz himself swapped effortlessly between his electric and semi acoustic guitars giving an ever-changing soundscape to the room. The two guitarists in the band swapping places depending on song chouce as well. I do not know the backing singers name but her voice was spectacular alongside his throughout the gig.
It was ony 45 minutes but left us wanting more, which thankfully we got when he joined Johnny Marr on stage later. What can I say ive been a big fan for years and seen him solo and with Supergrass years back a number of times, i never tire of this sound.
