The K’s took over the 1865, the fast energy rock from the indie rock band from Earlestown, Merseyside brought the house down. Delivered in their own was which switches from relaxed aloof swagger to down on the knees string killing guitar abuse. A great rhythm section backs it all up.
The crowd was pumped even before the first of two support acts started, people stood in the queue to get in discussing what they want to hear like kids in a sweatshop even breaking into song at time. Tom A Smith came on only thirty minutes after door time so no lengthy standing around. An 18 year old indie rock singer from Sunderland with a great stage presence, voice and range of songs which don’t reflect his youthful years. Definitely one to see in the future, glad he mentioned dates next year including one at The Joiners in February, that’s a ticket to get booked as soon as possible.
Next up were Crystal Tides, I’ve seen them before. Described as an indie rock band and also as a beach pop band, they sit somewhere in between that as a pop rock band, most tracks up-beat screaming positivity. There were certainly existing fans throughout the crowd very happy to be there.
The K’s took to the stage, I’d say almost casually but waisting no time, straight into the opening track ‘Icarus’ and just ripped through the set, sparse moments of banter between relentless guitar riffs and a barrage of vocals with often more lyrics than most bands fit into multiple tracks but the combination just works. The crowd mostly singing every track word for word, the fanbase is strong.
I first saw The K’s supporting The Reytons in October last year at the Portsmouth Guildhall and bigger stage suited them, like the festival clips from the summer but it was great to witness them in a smaller venue with a listed capacity of 750, just intense. The way they are growing the future gigs will definitely be bigger. They’ve just announced Victorious Festival in Portsmouth next year so if there’s no chance in between to see them, that’s already booked.
From Icarus to Sarajevo they had the venue bouncing, this is what live music is about!
