Hot Wax – Baptism of Fire!

Headline act Hot Wax went through the ringer a bit last night but it only made the crowd love them more. Eatboys, Wonderlux and Citi Dog all ploughed through their sets, then the gremlins hit. They take to the stage and singer Tallulah Sim-Savage had no mike, after a minute of so of screaming in jest at the sound guys she just crossed the stage and snuggled in front of bassist Lola Sam and burst into song, not halfway though that fisrt tune he guitar lost sound! Frustration could kill many shows but not this one, she spun she laughed, nervouse frustration laughter all the while a number of techs rana round, new cables, more new cables, Alfie Sayers on drums along with Lola on bass kept a musical background to the goings on. Deri Bovaird, singer with Citi Dog appears “use my board” retrieves it they lay it down, start connecting and Tallulah literally throws her pedal board up in the air, it crashes/bounces on the stage, i have no idea of its fate, more cables and sound guy tech panic and the guitar came to life.

Not her pedals or effects but you wouldn’t have known.

I have seen Hot Wax before, thats why I was there! described on their own website as an ‘English alternative rock trio based in Hastings’ im not sure that does them justice. They are alternative rock, they are Pop Punk, they are Noise Rock; Experimental Rock; Indie Rock; Post-Punk ….. you get everything. One minute the bass is driving a distorted heavy bassline, the next the singers bending sonic noises, screaming vocals then tender moments. Its a live show not to miss.

To say the issues actually added to the performance may not be reciprocated by the band but if any band could ride that its them. simply awesome!

Support from Citi Dog was a perfect fit, similar at time with sound, im sure that why he suggested using his effects, im guessing they know each other. Screaming punk vocals from Brighton with a heavy in your face sound, described as rising stars of the scene, i can see why.

Wonderlux came before and admitted on stage it was i think only their third show and biggest crowd ever! They didn’t show it, A tight knit band with great melodies and heavy moments, the guitarist avoiding the obvious with great melodic playing not the constant power chord which would have been an easy go to, this band could go places! Sadly due to work I only caught the last song from Eatboys but sounded great!.
